.

.

🖨 PRINTING & FILE FORMAT

Print at 100% / Actual Size for the stated finished dimensions. Disable Fit to Page and other automatic scaling options, and check the supplied scale-test square before printing the complete pattern.

When printing a US Letter file on A4 paper, the pattern will print at approximately 97.7% of its intended dimensions. This is the resulting scale and is not a percentage to enter manually.

A2 produces the same finished quilt dimensions with fewer sheets and less paper joining. Use an A2-compatible printer or print shop.

Color pattern pages by size: 30 × 42 US Letter — 35; 50 × 70 US Letter — 107 and A2 — 21; 70 × 98 US Letter — 180 and A2 — 41.

Reference/index pages are additional: 1 for 30 × 42 US Letter; 2 for each larger US Letter file; 1 for each A2 file. The separate 30 × 42 Blank pattern contains 35 pattern pages plus 1 reference page.

.

📐 CHOOSING YOUR SIZE

The 30 × 42-inch version creates a more compact quilt with smaller eye and toe details. The larger versions provide more room within those pieces, but need more workspace for paper preparation and section handling.

.

🧵 SEWING NOTES

Careful fabric placement and precise sewing around the eye, beak and toes help preserve the small details. Keep section labels visible and follow the supplied assembly order for the 31 sections, A–AE. The supplied Paper Piecing Tutorial explains the FPP technique.

No Y-seams are required.

.

🧵 FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Fabric requirements are calculated using 43-inch-wide fabric. Use the fabric chart supplied in OPEN FIRST for your exact size. Do not transfer fabric quantities from another size or version of the pattern.

.

📐 RESIZING

(Desired size ÷ Purchased pattern size) × 100 = Print percentage

For example, printing the 50 × 70-inch pattern at 80% produces 40 × 56 inches.

Apply the same percentage to both dimensions. Reducing the pattern also reduces the pieces and seam allowances proportionally. Enlargement beyond 100% is not recommended.

Further reduction of the 30 × 42-inch version is possible, but is not recommended for sewing comfort: the smallest pieces and seam allowances become even smaller.
