Description

Create a modern Christmas quilt with this Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) pattern featuring a geometric portrait of Santa Claus. The design combines his traditional red hat, expressive face, and detailed white beard using carefully arranged fabric shapes and contrasting colors.

Available in four sizes, sold separately, this pattern can be used to create anything from a compact Christmas wall hanging to a large decorative holiday throw. Its geometric construction and classic Christmas colors make it suitable for festive home decor, handmade gifts, and seasonal quilting projects.

The different fabric tones create depth and dimension throughout Santa's face, beard, hat, and clothing, giving the finished quilt a detailed portrait appearance with a contemporary patchwork finish.

The blank FPP templates also allow you to customize the original color palette and adapt the design to your preferred Christmas fabrics.

With 495 pieces, 65 sections, and 11 fabric colors, this Santa Claus pattern offers a detailed Foundation Paper Piecing project for quilters who enjoy geometric portraits and precision sewing.

🖨 PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS

All four sizes are designed for printing on standard US Letter paper.

Print your FPP templates at 100% (actual size) to obtain the intended finished dimensions.

If printing on A4 instead of US Letter, the final output will be reduced to approximately 97.7% of the intended dimensions. No manual scaling to 97.7% is required.

Always check your printer settings before starting and avoid unintended scaling.

PRINTING THE DIFFERENT SIZES

20×29" – MINI

The smallest version requires relatively little workspace and paper preparation. Its compact format makes it suitable for a Christmas wall hanging or decorative quilt project.

Some individual pieces are quite small at this scale, particularly around Santa's eyes, nose, and beard. Accurate printing and careful fabric placement are important for these detailed areas.

30×40" – BABY

This size provides larger fabric pieces while keeping the overall project relatively easy to manage.

It offers a comfortable balance between detailed portrait construction and manageable finished dimensions.

The facial features and beard are easier to sew than in the MINI version, although the project requires additional printed pages and some extra preparation.

36×52" – CRIB

The larger format provides more comfortable fabric handling and greater visibility of the individual geometric shapes.

The detailed sections around Santa's face and beard become easier to work with, while the overall project requires more space for preparing the foundations and organizing the assembled sections.

50×65" – THROW

The largest version is designed for a substantial Christmas quilt or decorative throw.

The individual fabric pieces are more generous in size, making the detailed areas of Santa's portrait more comfortable to sew.

However, the larger format requires additional printed pages, paper assembly, and workspace.

Allow sufficient time to prepare your foundations, join pages where necessary, and organize the 65 sections before sewing.

📐 NEED A CUSTOM QUILT SIZE?

The Santa Claus pattern is available in four finished sizes, allowing you to select the version closest to your intended project.

MINI – 20×29"

Further reduction is not recommended for the smallest size.

This version already contains compact pieces, particularly around Santa's eyes, nose, and beard. Reducing the pattern further could make these details excessively small and difficult to sew accurately.

BABY, CRIB & THROW – RESIZING

The three larger sizes can be reduced if you need a smaller finished quilt.

Use the following formula to calculate your printing percentage:

(Desired size ÷ Pattern size) × 100 = Print percentage

For example:

• 30×40" → 24×32" = Print at 80%

• 36×52" → 27×39" = Print at 75%

• 50×65" → 40×52" = Print at 80%

When reducing a pattern, all pieces and seam allowances decrease proportionally.

The finished dimensions are determined by the sewing lines, so the resized design will maintain its original proportions.

Please keep in mind that significant reductions can make smaller geometric pieces more difficult to handle, particularly around Santa's facial features and the detailed sections of his beard.

For the most comfortable sewing experience, we recommend selecting the available size closest to your desired finished dimensions.

Enlargement beyond 100% is not recommended.

🎯 ABOUT COMPLEXITY

This Santa Claus pattern is rated Intermediate.

It is suitable for confident beginners who already have some experience with Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), as well as experienced quilters who enjoy detailed geometric portraits and precision sewing.

The design contains 495 pieces organized into 65 sections, allowing the different elements of Santa's portrait to be assembled progressively.

The main challenges involve accurate fabric placement, maintaining clean joins between the geometric shapes, and working through the smaller pieces that create Santa's facial features and beard.

The sewing experience will vary depending on your selected size.

MINI – 20×29"

The compact format is easy to organize and requires limited workspace.

However, some pieces are relatively small, particularly around the eyes, nose, and beard. These areas require precise stitching, good lighting, and careful fabric positioning.

The main challenge at this scale is sewing the smallest pieces accurately rather than managing a large project.

BABY – 30×40"

The individual pieces are more comfortable to handle while the overall project remains manageable.

This size provides a balance between sewing precision and project organization.

The facial details still require attention, but the larger pieces make fabric positioning and stitching more comfortable than in the MINI version.

CRIB – 36×52"

The larger pieces provide greater visibility and more comfortable fabric handling.

The main challenge begins to shift toward preparing the printed foundations, keeping track of the 65 sections, and managing the assembled portions of the portrait.

A dedicated workspace and an organized approach to labeling and sorting your sections are recommended.

THROW – 50×65"

The generous piece sizes make the detailed construction of Santa's face, beard, and hat easier to handle.

However, the larger finished dimensions require additional paper preparation, taping, and workspace.

Expect more printed pages and allow sufficient time to organize the foundations and assemble the larger sections.

The included color closeups and section references are particularly useful for keeping track of the different fabric tones and maintaining accurate assembly throughout this detailed project.

Loving it. I have converted to use similar fabric colors in moda grunge. I really like the markings you include for lining up the pieces and trimming the corners.
