This Highland Cow Foundation Paper Piecing quilt pattern creates a modern geometric cattle portrait with the long coat, horns and distinctive face of a Highland cow.
The design contains 300 pieces, 26 sections and 7 fabric colors, using layered warm browns, golden beige, black and white to build the coat and facial details.
.
📐 AVAILABLE SIZES
• 33 × 50" — US Letter + A2
• 47 × 70" — US Letter + A2
• 60 × 90" — US Letter + A2
The smaller version produces a compact animal portrait suitable for a wall hanging, while the larger sizes give more physical space to work with the narrow geometric pieces used throughout the coat.
.
📂 WHAT YOU’LL RECEIVE
The pattern package includes the reference and assembly documents for the Highland Cow design, the Sections & Colors Naming Closeups, and the step-by-step Foundation Paper Piecing tutorial.
33 × 50", 47 × 70" and 60 × 90"
• Color FPP printable file — US Letter
• Color FPP printable file — A2
Both printable formats include an integrated Print Scale Check, numbered FPP pages and Glue Edge Index to help you check the scale and find page connections.
.
🖨️ PRINTING & SCALE
Print the pattern at 100% / Actual Size. Do not use Fit to Page, Scale to Fit, Shrink to Fit or another automatic scaling option.
US Letter files include a 1" × 1" Print Scale Check.
A2 files include both 1" × 1" and 5 × 5 cm scale references and can be printed through a copy shop, print shop or A2-compatible printer.
For the larger sizes, A2 considerably reduces pattern preparation:
• 33 × 50" — 50 FPP pages in US Letter / 11 in A2
• 47 × 70" — 94 FPP pages in US Letter / 19 in A2
• 60 × 90" — 141 FPP pages in US Letter / 35 in A2
If a US Letter file is printed on A4 paper instead, the finished quilt will measure approximately 97.7% of the intended dimensions.
.
🧵 FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
Fabric requirements are based on 43" wide quilting fabric.
The fabric guide provides both the technical minimum required for each color and a practical recommended purchase amount in yardage, allowing a small cutting margin.
The suggested Highland Cow palette uses seven values ranging from black and dark brown through rust, amber and golden beige to white. The included grayscale references can also be used when adapting the palette while preserving the contrast and depth of the design.
.
📐 RESIZING
Patterns can be reduced by adjusting the print percentage: (Desired size ÷ Pattern size) × 100.
For example, printing the 60 × 90" version at 80% produces a 48 × 72" quilt.
Pieces and seam allowances decrease proportionally. Reducing a version that already has very small pieces is not recommended for sewing comfort, but is possible if you are comfortable working with very tiny pieces and reduced seam allowances. Do not enlarge the pattern beyond 100%.
.
🎯 SKILL LEVEL
This is a detailed FPP animal portrait with 300 individual pieces across 26 sections.
The most precise areas are concentrated around the Highland cow's long hair, horns, muzzle and facial features, where several narrow and sharply angled pieces meet.
The larger versions give more room around individual pieces, but require more printed pages, more workspace and additional pattern preparation.
No Y-seams are required; the complexity comes primarily from the number and geometry of the pieces rather than Y-seam construction.
.
🎁 PERFECT FOR
A strong choice for modern animal quilts, Highland cow wall hangings, cattle and farm animal quilt projects, geometric FPP portraits and handmade quilts for Highland cow lovers.
